The history of Cigna dates back a staggering 225 years. In fact, Cigna is the nation’s oldest stockholder-owned insurance company. However, Cigna did not always offer its customers health insurance. At the beginning of its journey, this company provided marine insurance only under the name “Insurance Company of North America.”
Cigna did not expand its focus to include healthcare insurance until after World War II. Cigna, which was known as “Connecticut General” at the time, introduced its first health insurance policy in 1950. Since that time, Cigna has grown and evolved considerably. Today, the company’s brand identity centers on providing customers with ways to improve their health and well-being, as well as a strong sense of security.
Cigna provides health insurance all around the globe, serving more than 30 different countries. The network includes more than 17 million medical customers worldwide.
Who Accepts Cigna Insurance?
Cigna’s network is sizable, offering customers plenty of options when it comes to finding a provider for addiction treatment. In fact, Cigna’s global network includes:
- More than 1.5 million relationships with providers and healthcare facilities
- More than 67,000 pharmacies
- More than 500 hospitals
- More than 175,000 mental and behavioral healthcare providers
In recent years, Cigna has been focusing much of its efforts on growing its mental and behavioral healthcare network, which has expanded by 70 percent since 2016.
Comparing Cigna Healthcare Plans
To serve the needs of a variety of different consumers, Cigna offers different healthcare plans. The exact plans available may depend on your location, as well as whether you are buying a plan on your own or receiving coverage through an employer. Some of the healthcare plans available to Cigna customers include:
Cigna Open Access Plus
Cigna Open Access Plus allows you to choose your own healthcare providers. These plans vary, with some allowing you to choose out-of-network providers at a higher cost, while others allow out-of-network care for emergencies only. You will not need a referral for specialists under this type of plan.
Cigna LocalPlus plans offer lower cost coverage that is restricted to a network of local doctors, specialists and facilities. Urgent care and emergencies are typically covered even if you are out-of-network. The primary benefit of this type of plan is lower premiums. However, in exchange, you will have fewer options when choosing providers.
Cigna Preferred Provider Organizations
Cigna Preferred Provider Organizations, or PPOs, allow you to receive in-network care from a large selection of providers and facilities. When receiving care outside of this network, higher costs will apply. However, PPO plans will cover qualifying emergency care at in-network prices. Cigna PPO plans allow you more freedom to choose from a wide network of addiction treatment providers.
Cigna Exclusive Provider Organization Plans
Cigna Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) plans are similar to PPO plans in that they include a national network of providers you can choose from. However, unlike a PPO plan, EPO plans do not cover care received from providers outside of your network. This means that your addiction treatment services will only be covered if you select a program within your plan’s network.
Cigna Account-Based Plans
Cigna account-based plans include Health Reimbursement Accounts, Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts. Each type of account has a different structure and different rules. These plans offer tax advantages that make them appealing for some Cigna customers.
Cigna Medical Network Plans
If you have a Cigna Medical Network Plan, you must select a Primary Care Provider (PCP) who will coordinate all of your medical care. This means that you will need a referral from your PCP any time you receive services from a specialist, including addiction treatment. Different Medical Network Plan structures are available from Cigna.
Cigna Health Maintenance Organization
Cigna’s Health Maintenance Organization, or HMO, plans offer a local network of doctors and facilities that are approved to provide care. Under this type of plan, all care will be coordinated by an in-network Primary Care Provider of your choosing. If you are in need of addiction treatment, you must obtain a referral from your PCP.
Cigna SureFit is an affordable option that provides you with a limited local network of providers. As with an HMO, Cigna SureFit requires customers to obtain a referral before receiving any specialized care, including addiction treatment services.
Will Addiction Treatment Be Covered by Cigna?
Cigna healthcare plans will cover qualifying addiction treatment services. The exact coverage you will receive will depend on a wide range of different factors, including:
- The requirements and provisions of your insurance plan
- The cost of the program you choose
- The length of time you spend in treatment
- Whether you choose an in-network facility
- Your deductible and coinsurance requirements
Because of all of these factors, the cost of addiction treatment can vary widely. Some patients may be able to receive treatment for free, while others may owe a substantial bill. For this reason, it is important to understand your insurance coverage and the specific expenses associated with the treatment program you have chosen. Discussing these matters directly with your insurance provider prior to entering a treatment program is highly recommended.
Will Preauthorization or Precertification Be Required?
Many of Cigna’s healthcare plans do require preauthorization or precertification for addiction treatment. This simply means that your provider must contact the insurance company prior to your enrollment in treatment to certify that the program is medically necessary. If your Cigna plan requires you to obtain preauthorization or precertification for treatment, it is important to complete this process before treatment begins to avoid any unexpected expenses.
In some cases, Cigna may not approve your request for treatment immediately. Typically, you will be required to provide more information. However, this does not mean Cigna will deny the coverage.
The specific addiction treatment services that require preauthorization or precertification will vary by plan. Contact Cigna directly to find out if your intended treatment program will require approval in advance.
